The project team running the "Humanoid Robotic Healthcare Assistant" project sponsored by the Center for Aging Science has won the Bronze UBTECH Best Industry Application Award at the IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN) on August 29, 2024. The work described in their award-winning paper, "A Dialogue System Architecture for Humanoid Robots Targeting Patient Interview Tasks" enables humanoid robots to improve the timeliness of their spoken and gestural responses, making it easier and more natural for people to speak with them. The paper authors include the graduate student researchers from the Departments of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE): Yifan SHEN, Dingdong LIU, Yejin BANG, Ho Shu CHAN, Rita FRIESKE, Hoo Choun CHUNG, Jay NIELES, Tianjia ZHANG, Kien T. PHAM and Yini FANG, lecturer Wai Yi Rosita CHENG in the Language Center and the faculty supervisors Professors Qifeng CHEN (CSE/ECE), Pascale FUNG (ECE), Xiaojuan MA (CSE) and Bert SHI (ECE). The primary authors Yifan Shen, Dingdong Liu and Yejin Bang contributed equally to this work.
The RO-MAN conference is a leading international forum where state-of-the-art innovative results, the latest developments as well as future perspectives relating to robot and human interactive communication are presented and discussed. It covers a wide range of topics including theories, methodologies, technologies, empirical and experimental studies. Papers presented examine human-robot interaction from the perspectives of robotic technology, psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, human factors, ethics and policy. This year's conference was held in Pasadena, California.
