HKUST has distinguished itself in the 2026/2027 Strategic Topics Grant (STG) of the Research Grants Council (RGC) under the University Grants Committee. Of the six approved projects, two are led by HKUST scholars, collectively receiving more than HKD 54.41 million in funding (including matching fund from the University). This represents the highest total funding amount among local universities. The projects leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare to enhance the management of bacterial infections in older adults and provide integrated management for Parkinson's disease, underscoring HKUST's leadership in cutting-edge research and its commitment to developing innovative solutions to the healthcare challenges posed by the aging global population. Led by Prof. Nancy IP, HKUST President, Morningside Professor of Life Science, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Nervous System Disorders, HKUST today announced the launch of a five-year research initiative, the HKUST Healthy Longevity Study. This pioneering study focuses on older Chinese adults in Hong Kong and aims to uncover the key determinants of “healthy longevity.” The findings will provide a scientific foundation for developing more precise and personalized health management strategies, contributing to the advancement of healthy aging across society. HKUST today launched the NeuroCare Community Project, a five-year initiative to enhance early detection of Alzheimer’s risk for Hong Kong’s elderly who need support. Working with over 40 community centers under more than a dozen non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and in collaboration with Tung Wah College (TWC), the Project aims to screen 6,000 community-dwelling elderly aged 60-75, shifting the focus from late-stage diagnosis to proactive, community-based care. HKUST has recently introduced SmartCare – an AI platform developed by HKUST researchers that redefines patient journeys from triage to treatment – in its on-campus clinic. This landmark deployment kicks off a six-month pilot study open to 15,000+ students, faculty, and staff. Developed by Prof. CHEN Hao from the Center for Aging Science and Director of Smart Lab, SmartCare builds on HKUST’s invention, MedDr—one of the largest open-source generalist multimodal foundation models for medicine in the world. Center for Aging Science researcher Prof. LI Xiaomeng and her team have developed a groundbreaking AI technology that reconstructs precise 3D bones and organs models from minimal X-ray images, slashing patients’ radiation exposure by up to 99% compared to CT scans. This innovation not only enhances patient safety but also reduces costs and wait times, with potential applications in surgical planning, real-time imaging, and personalized implants. HKUST team is collaborating with different industry partners, including bone printing company Koln 3D Technology (Medical) Limited (Koln 3D), to implement this technology in public hospitals.
