The Hong Kong Survey of Youth and Elderly (HKSYE)

Text Area

The Hong Kong Survey of Youth and Elderly (HKSYE) is a collaboration between researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). It aims to investigate four major issues related to youth (ages 18—29) and elderly (age 65+) in Hong Kong: diversitywellbeingCOVID-19 and elderly care.

We will conduct a territory-wide survey of a sample of Hong Kong households.

This work is funded by the Center for Aging Science at the HKUST and the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.

The study procedures have the approval of the HKUST Human Artefacts Research and Ethics Committee under protocols HREP-2022-0200 and HREP-2023-0146, and the University of Hong Kong Human Research Ethics Committee under protocol EA210412.

Diversity: The study will include different ethnicities in Hong Kong. This includes Chinese as well as ethnic minorities including Indian, Nepalese and Pakistani.

Wellbeing: The study will explore the well-being of youth and elderly. This includes their health, social networks and social integration in the neighborhood and community.

COVID-19: The study will document how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected elderly in Hong Kong, including types of support they received, and how they view the government’s COVID-19 policies.

Elderly care: It is projected that by 2039, over 30 percent of Hong Kong’s population will be above 65 years of age. To successfully age in place, these older people will require affordable quality care within the community. Therefore, this study will examine the physical and mental well-being of this group, the care they receive, their participation in government programs, and the role of foreign domestic helpers as caregivers.

NEWS

The first phase of the study will begin in October 2023, followed by a full launch in November/December.
